A move against French as a second language in Morocco.

Recently the government of Morocco announced its move to replace French language with English as the second official language in the country. The Ministry of Education and Scientific Research in Morocco is planning to implement English language in the universities imparting engineering and medical education. Further more, students aspiring for a doctorate will have to be well-versed and acquainted in English language. French language has always been regarded as the major obstacle in the growth of its educational system of Morocco.

English as a global language dominates business, education, culture and politics more than any other languages in the world.English has been adopted by countries like Spain and Portugal as the major foreign language to be inducted in their education modules. The acceptance of English in many other countries has been gaining importance with the increasing globalization in the world. Most of the non-English companies have been collaborating with translators in order to create better understanding with their clients in English speaking locations.

According to Lahcen Daoudi, Morroco’s Minister of Higher Education people in Morocco are neither proficient in Arabic nor French.  He further says that the deterioration in the education system of Morocco is only due to adoption of French as a second language. This view is supported by the fact that English has been the official language for all the scientific research around the world. The Ministry of Education and Scientific Research therefore stressed that English should be accepted as the major language after Arabic in the educational system of Morocco.
